WHY: The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) will honor “Women’s History Month” by hosting its 12th Annual Women of Power National Summit (BWR Summit ’23) and bringing together Black women leaders and allies from across the nation for five (5) days to share and strategize on high-impact public policy priorities and develop organizing and empowerment plans to lift and improve the lives of Black women, girls and families. The Summit comes as the Black community continues to build and organize political power following the recent 2022 midterm elections. The gathering will bring together hundreds of Black women leaders who are on the frontlines of organizing, advocating and serving the community all while withstanding ongoing threats to our rights, freedoms, health, economy and representative democracy.
As we continue to endure and overcome these threats, this year’s Summit theme, “It’s Time to Reset, Rejuvenate, Reimagine, Resist & Act!” embodies the BWR Summit’s mission to energize and leverage the collective and individual power of Black women and girls. The Summit will focus on amplifying the intergenerational power and voices of Black women, continuing to recognize their historic role in shifting political power, and inspiring all women and girls to reach new levels of leadership in advocacy, business and elected office.
Melanie L. Campbell, President & CEO, NCBCP and Convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable states, “I could not think of a more appropriate summit theme. It is time to reset, rejuvenate, reimagine, resist and act! Black women have an unprecedented opportunity to continue shaping the health and well-being of our communities.” Campbell continues, “As we face an unprecedented time in our nation’s history, we are also confronted by an unprecedented opportunity. The past year has been one of immense challenges to our democracy, health and personal well-being. But as we have so aptly shown, we have risen to the challenges. This gathering will serve as an opportunity to plan, strategize, celebrate and honor our accomplishments. From protecting our voting rights, to ensuring the first-ever Black woman Justice to the U.S. Supreme Court, this gathering will provide attendees with a roadmap to chart our own futures and continue making history.”
“I am humbled to be the Honorary Chair of this powerful summit and serve alongside my fellow sister in public service, Melanie Campbell. At this summit, we come together to celebrate our victories and recommit to a brighter future where every woman’s voice and power has a seat at the table,” said Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. “From safeguarding our democracy, to breaking barriers and making history while ensuring underserved communities are no longer overlooked, we are collectively trailblazers and game-changers who are rewriting the narrative of what is possible in this nation. I look forward to joining so many powerful women from across the country as we work together to shape the course of our communities, our nation, and the world.”
