Melanie L. Campbell Named a Finalist for Excellence in Advocacy Award in Women Serving Women Category

Washington, DC – National Coalition on Black Civic Participation president and CEO, Melanie L. Campbell, was selected as a finalist for an Excellence in Advocacy Award in the Campaign for Women Serving Women category, organizers of the Professional Women in Advocacy Conference announced recently.

There were 190 total nominees for the awards which judges narrowed down to three finalists in each of five categories. One awardee from each category of finalists will be announced at the Excellence in Advocacy Reception on Thursday, November 20th at 6pm at the Capital Hilton.

Known for her unique ability to build powerful coalitions, Campbell has fought for civil, youth and women’s rights for over 20 years. She is a veteran at planning and leading highly successful multi-million dollar civic engagement and issue-based campaigns and recognized as one of the hardest working leaders in the social justice movement. Her leadership played a pivotal role in the 2012 election where turnout among Black women surpassed every other demographic for the first time in history.

In her role as convener of Black Women’s Roundtable Public Policy Network (BWR), Campbell brings together coalitions of women from diverse races, ethnicity’s and backgrounds to advocate for policies to advance women. She spearheaded BWR’s efforts to promote Black women appointments to high-level positions in federal government and was instrumental in encouraging the appointment of several African Americans to key positions in the Obama Administration. Most recently Campbell led a delegation to meet with the National Football League (NFL) and Commissioner Roger Goodell in response to a lack of representation of Black women and other women of color on the NFL’s newly developed domestic violence and related issues external advisory group.

The Excellence in Advocacy Awards are held during the Professional Women in Advocacy Conference, a national conference providing professional development and leadership training to women in all areas of advocacy. Judging for the Excellence in Advocacy Awards is conducted by leadership of the esteemed Bryce Harlow Foundation, an organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of professional advocacy and increasing the understanding of the essential role of advocacy in the development of sound public policy.
