Fired up and ready to turn out black youth in record numbers, the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP), Florida Black Youth Vote! (BYV), and Florida Unity ’08 Campaign will bring their message to register, verify, and VOTE FIRST to the City of Riviera Beach for a day-long event Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Edgy, insightful, provocative and uncompromising, the stand-up routines of comedian Shang have always echoed the voice and sentiments of the people. And now, as the political comedic voice of “Vote First” a new campaign launched by the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s (NCBCP) Unity ’08 Campaign, Shang’s performance will strike yet another chord as he encourages his fellow comedians and the black community at large to not only vote, but to be among the first to cast a ballot.

Anticipating the largest voter turnout in history - and ensuing problems at the polls - the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) left no stone unturned during a three-day Operation Big Vote Training Academy held in New Orleans last week to train field organizers on voter registration, education, mobilization, and voter protection.

However, as national elected officials continue spinning their wheels hurling well-crafted sound bites at each other, a group of young activists is quietly making strategic moves, determined to flip the script. This week the members of Black Youth Vote! (BYV!) went into full gear for the final days of a three-month, 10-state, voter registration drive.

Prairie View A&M University Student Government Association and Black Youth Vote! Texas will hold a march and rally Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 9:00 AM to protest ongoing student voting disfranchisement in Waller County Texas. The students will assemble at the PVAMU Memorial Student Center at 9:00 AM and march to the courthouse in Hempstead (over seven miles). Officials at the Historically Black University agreed to excuse the 8000-plus student body to participate in the march, which will take place on the first day of early voting

As part of ongoing efforts to motivate young people to engage in the political process, the League of Young Voters Education Fund (LYVEF) recently teamed up with the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s (NCBCP) Black Youth Vote! (BYV!) for an innovative civic participation training at North High School in Des Moines, IA. The youth later participated in the Black and Brown Forum Presidential Debate.

Appalled by the lack of progress in the Gulf, a group of prominent business, civic and entertainment organizations have joined forces to mobilize Americans to converge upon New Orleans on August 29, the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The event, "8/29, A Day of Presence," will take place on August 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ernest N. Morial Conventional Center and is intended to force the government to act swiftly to create a Marshall Plan to restore New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region.

It saddens me to announce the recent death of National Coalition on Black Civic Participation founding board members, Yvonne Price, who passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2006 due to complications from a slip and fall accident nearly she endured nearly two months ago.

Civil rights organizations quickly turned a vigil in front of the Longworth House Office Building into a celebration following reauthorization of the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act of 2006 without punitive amendments. The concerted advocacy and sustained citizen pressure brought to bear by the combined efforts of the 80-organization National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, the Black Leadership Forum, and the National Urban League and served to keep the equality of voting opportunity high on the American public’s agenda.
