MELANIE L. CAMPBELL, PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL COALITION ON BLACK CIVIC PARTICIPATION AND CONVENER OF THE BLACK WOMEN’S ROUNDTABLE ISSUES STATEMENT ON SENATE VOTE TO CONFIRM JUDGE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON TO SERVE ON U.S. SUPREME COURT

Washington, D.C. -- On Thursday, April 7th, 2022, Melanie L. Campbell, President & CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) and Convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) issued the following statement in the U.S. Senate vote to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court:

"The NCBCP and Black Women's Roundtable congratulates Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for her historic confirmation to become the first Black woman to serve as a Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court! American History was made today and I am truly moved to see the U.S. Senate confirm Judge Jackson with a bi-partisan vote of 53-47.

“In the midst of the unprecedented challenges facing our nation, we are also faced with a momentous occasion to reflect on the incredible progress that is a result of the decades of work undertaken by the civil rights movement.

“In its 233 years of existence, there has never been a Black woman on the U. S. Supreme Court. That will no longer be the case. I want to thank President Biden and the Biden-Harris Administration for fulfilling its campaign promise and acknowledging that it is long overdue for a Black woman to serve on the highest court of the land.

“Black women have been among the fiercest champions of our democratic institutions throughout our history. At a time where those very democratic foundations are under attack, that is a tradition I know will serve our legal system, and entire country very well. True justice and equality can only occur when every branch of our democratic institutions look like the people they serve. Today we made herstory!”

Advisory:  As a result of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s historic confirmation to the U. S. Supreme Court, the Black Women’s Roundtable will host a Black Women Leaders & Allies Coalition Appreciation Luncheon Celebration and Power Table Talk, in partnership with NCNW on Friday, April 8, 2022, at 2 pm - 4 pm at The Point DC.  Please refer to the attached flier for more details. The BWR Power Table Talk will be streamed on @NCBP and #RolandMartinUnfiltered Facebook Pages.
