NATIONAL COALITION ON BLACK CIVIC PARTICIPATION PRESENTS 23RD ANNUAL SPIRIT OF DEMOCRACY AWARDS VIRTUAL GALA & INTERGENERATIONAL ROUNDTABLE

Washington, DC (December 14, 2020) -- The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) will host its 23rd Annual Spirit of Democracy Awards Virtual Gala & Intergenerational Roundtable on Tuesday December 15th at 7:30 pm, EST.

The event, in its 23rd year, will honor some of the nation’s brightest and most legendary public servants for civil rights, economic empowerment, labor and social justice. Honorees will be celebrated for their extraordinary leadership and commitment to democracy in a year where the threats and challenges to democracy were extraordinary, simultaneous and unprecedented.

Melanie L. Campbell, President and CEO of NCBP states, ”2020 has been a year unlike any other when it comes to the threats facing our democracy and the very lives of Black and brown people. The efforts taken to safeguard our institutions and protect our well-being have kept us busy throughout the year. Together, we formed coalitions to ensure Black people were counted fairly in the 2020 Census while also voting in record numbers. We mobilized resources to protect against the many attacks on our voting rights that included rampant voter suppression and misinformation via social media aimed at discouraging Black people from voting.

In this unprecedented year, The National Coalition has also worked to fight for federal relief for our communities impacted by the COVID19 global pandemic, which I along with several of my family members were blessed to survive. We joined in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement and supported our young leaders, who were on the front lines calling for racial, economic & social justice, criminal justice and policing reform and more---a movement that was sparked by the unjust killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Armaud Arbery and so many more.

Tomorrow's virtual celebration will honor some of our nation’s most premiere leaders, justice warriors, organizers and advocates. As we honor them, I'm reminded of the infamous words of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King when he said "the arc of the moral universe bends towards justice."

The 2020 awards exemplify the diversity of our democracy and highlights the role these champions have played in ensuring that ‘justice’ continues to bend towards justice..

The evening ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook, YouTube and Periscope via @NCBCP and #RolandMartinUnfiltered at 7:30 p.m., EST. The evening will be emceed by Meshelle, The Indie-Mom of Comedy and Rev. Tony Lee, Host of Sunday Morning Hope Radio, WPGC 95.5 FM Radio DC. Entertainment for the event will be performed by Chelist Benjamin Gates.
