National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and Black Women's Roundtable Statement on Bipartisan Agreement to Raise Debt Ceiling

Washington, D.C. (June 3, 2023) -- Last night, President Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office, offering praise for the bipartisan debt ceiling agreement recently passed by Congress. Following the address, Melanie L. Campbell, President & CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) and Convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) made the following statement:

“Yesterday, Congress passed bipartisan legislation to raise the debt ceiling, and the bill is on its way to the President's desk. This crucial action ensures that the federal government avoids defaulting on its financial obligations and will be able to pay its bills. Failure to raise the debt limit would have been catastrophic and damaged our nation's reputation around the world and harmed millions of Americans, including those who rely on Social Security and other essential safety net benefits.

We express our appreciation for President Biden's leadership in finding a pathway to a bipartisan agreement with the House Majority, and we extend our gratitude to OMB Director Shalanda Young for her exceptional leadership and efforts throughout this process. We also are concerned about certain provisions included in the final debt ceiling legislation. The allocation of resources towards projects like the Mountain Valley Pipeline, enforcement of ineffective work requirements for essential benefits, and the resumption of student loan payments that will adversely impact vulnerable Americans.

Furthermore, we must remember that elections matter, and the upcoming 2024 Presidential election cycle holds immense importance. It is crucial for voters to remain aware of those who voted and worked diligently to protect our nation's economy and those who were willing to jeopardize it for partisan gain.
