THE NATIONAL COALITION ON BLACK CIVIC PARTICIPATION AND BLACK WOMEN’S ROUNDTABLE RELEASES STATEMENT ON NASHVILLE SCHOOL SHOOTING TRAGEDY AND CALL FOR FEDERAL BAN ON ASSAULT WEAPONS TO SAVE THE LIVES OF CHILDREN ACROSS THE NATION

Washington, D.C. (March 28, 2023) - The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) and Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) expresses its deepest sympathies and prayers for the families and friends of the victims of the recent mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, TN. The shooting resulted in the tragic loss of six innocent lives (3 adults & 3 children) and left several others injured

This tragic shooting is another reminder that gun violence is the leading cause of death among American children, with firearms claiming the lives of more than 3,000 children and teens every year. This sobering statistic highlights the urgent need for comprehensive action to address gun violence in our communities.

The NCBCP and BWR stand in solidarity with the Biden-Harris Administration in its call to Congressional members, especially those who have not supported comprehensive federal gun safety legislation, to listen to the American people and pass a federal assault weapons ban and other common-sense gun safety measures that will save the lives of our children from being slaughtered in their schools and communities.

As Melanie L. Campbell, President and CEO of the NCBCP and Convener, BWR, stated, "The epidemic of gun violence continues to ravage our country, and it is unacceptable that mass shootings have become a regular occurrence in all communities. Gun violence is the leading cause of death among American children and we cannot afford to wait any longer for comprehensive action to address this crisis. While we express our condolences to the families affected by the recent mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, we also call on Congress to join forces to eradicate the scourge of gun violence that is plaguing our nation—by passing a federal ban on assault weapons that history has shown us in the past will save lives.  Our children deserve to feel and be safe at school and in their communities. Now is the time to do the right thing–pass comprehensive federal gun safety legislation now.”
