NCBCP Convene's Black Politics & Power Building Gathering in Atlanta
Election Results Assessed; Next Steps Planned To Strengthen Black Voting Power, Preparing For Census 2020/Redistricting
January 31, 2017 (Washington, DC) – The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP), and a number of its partners and allies, spent the weekend of January 27 and 28 “going deep” to analyze what happened in the local, state and national 2016 elections. The “Black Politics & Power Building Organizing Convening (2017 – 2022),” was held in Atlanta, GA to engage in critical strategy discussions to expand, build and increase Black civic, political and voting power in the South and other key states across the nation.
More than 60 NCBCP partners and allies participated in the convening including: Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-2nd Dist.), newly-elected Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus; Marc Morial, President and CEO, National Urban League; Tamika Mallory, Co-Chair of the hugely successful Women’s March on Washington; Janaye Ingram, Director of Logistics, Women’s March on Washington; Thomas W. Dortch, Jr., Chairman of the Board, National Black Caucus Alumni Hall of Fame; Clayola Brown,President, A. Philip Randolph Institute; Honorable Laura Hall, President, NOBEL Women; Gerald Hudson, Executive Vice President, SEIU; Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner, Co-Chair, National African American Clergy Network; Latosha Brown, Project Director, Grantmakers for Southern Progress, NFG; Cora Masters Barry, Political Strategist; Moses Boyd, Executive Director, Show Your Power; Reggie Weaver,HBCU Outreach Coordinator, NC Black Youth Vote/Common Cause; TC Muhammad, Advocacy Manager, Hip Hop Caucus; Rev. Tony Lee, Pastor, Community of Hope AME Temple Hills MD;, Dr. Elsie Scott, Founding Director, Ronald W. The intergenerational organizing sessions included; Developing a Strategy to Fund Our Own Politics;Leveraging Our Voting & Political Power in a Trump Presidency & 115th Congress; Expanding Our Voting & Political Power in the States; and Organizing for Census 2020/The Redistricting Key for Economic & Political Empowerment in Black America.
“We spent lots of time strategizing and organizing on how we must come together in a unified front to leverage our voting and political power in this country to win on issues impacting Black communities,” saidMelanie Campbell, President/CEO of the NCBCP and convener of the Black Women's Roundtable (BWR). “We are focused on ensuring we are ready for the fight and challenges ahead on a local, state and national level in 2017 and beyond.”
The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) is one of the most active civil rights and social justice organizations in the nation “dedicated to increasing civic engagement, economic and voter empowerment in Black America.” The Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) is the women and girls empowerment arm of the NCBCP. At the forefront of championing just and equitable public policy on behalf of Black women, BWR promotes their health and wellness, economic security and prosperity, education and global empowerment as key elements for success.
