Black Youth Vote/Black Male Initiative Hold Men & Boys Capitol Hill Gathering May 23-24

In April of 2015, the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s (NCBCP), Black Youth Vote! Civic Leadership & Engagement Program, hosted its Inaugural BYV! Gathering of Black Men and Boys Day on Capitol Hill & Advocacy Training (BYV GBM Project), at Howard University in partnership with the Ron Walters Leadership and Public Policy Center.

Through the 2015 BYV! GBM Project, Black Youth Vote! trained over 200 Black men and boys on how to effectively engage their members of Congress. Participants were also encouraged to travel back to their home states and continue to utilize their newly developed advocacy skills. The advocacy training was led by Former Congressman Kendrick Meeks, Ron Walters Fellow, prior to going on Capitol Hill for their congressional visits.

This year, we are excited to organize the 2016 BYV! Day on Capitol Hill under the theme, "Moving From Protest to Policy to the Polls!",with the goal of taking hundreds more Black men and boys on The Hill to educate their elected officials on the issues they care about.

The 2016 BYV! Hill Day priority issues include: Jobs, Education, Criminal Justice Reform, Fatherhood and Voting Rights. We will also have a special focus on the importance of increasing incentives and support to Historically Black Colleges and Universities to attract more black male teachers and educators.
