Black Women's Roundtable Hosts Its 8th Annual Women of Power National Summit

Releasing its 6th Annual Status of Black Women in the U. S. & Key States Report

Washington, D.C. (February 20, 2019) -- The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) Intergenerational Public Policy Network will celebrate Women’s History Month by hosting its 8th Annual Women of Power National Summit (BWR Summit ’19) from March 14 - 19, 2019 at the Renaissance Washington DC Downtown Hotel. BWR Summit ‘19 will bring together Black women leaders and allies from across the country for five power packed days to share its public policy agenda priorities with the 116th Congress, develop organizing and empowerment strategies to lift up and improve the lives of Black women, their families & communities and much more!

This year’s theme, “It’s Time to Lead, Rise, and Shine,” embodies the BWR Summit’s mission to empower Black women and girls to build, organize, and strategize to leverage their collective and individual economic and political power. The BWR Summit is a core component of the BWR Healthy, Wealthy & Wise Empowerment Project. The BWR Empowerment Project focuses on amplifying the intergenerational power and voices of black women and girls on race & gender equity, economic security & prosperity, income inequality, health, economic, educational and social issues impacting urban centers, small towns and rural communities.

“Each year the BWR Women of Power Summit serves as the premier forum focused on showcasing & lifting up the unique power, leadership, expertise, talents and influence of Black women from diverse backgrounds and ages” shares Melanie L. Campbell, President & CEO, NCBCP and Convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable. “The summit arms our BWR members and other attendees with tools and resources to advocate for the issues that matter most to them in the halls of Congress and in their state and local government and stresses the importance of self-care as leaders” shared Campbell.

In addition, the summit will include the release of the 6th Annual BWR Report, “Black Women in the U.S. & Key States, 2019,” will assess the challenges, triumphs and overall contemporary condition of Black women in the nation. Dr. Avis Jones-DeWeever, a leading researcher on gender and race is serving as the editor-in-chief for the 2019 BWR Report. “The 2019 BWR Report will include findings on the influence of the Black women’s vote in the 2018 Mid-Terms and its implications to mobilizing this powerful electorate in the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election and continues to take an in-depth look at the issue of power and where Black women fall within the overarching power-dynamic,” shares Dr. Jones-DeWeever.

BWR Summit ’19 lead sponsors include: AT&T, AARP, The Coca-Company, Verizon, National Education Association, Service Employees International Union, The Moriah Fund.
