Volunteer to Become A Poll Watcher & Poll Worker

Draconian photo ID requirements and other voter suppression legislation enacted in several states will disenfranchise people of color, students, low‐income and senior citizens. These restrictive laws are clearly voter suppression tactics that threaten the right of citizens to participate in the democratic process. These laws are not addressing fraud, they are modern‐day poll taxes designed to remove eligible voters from our democracy.
Black Youth Vote! Foot Soldiers for Democracy is a college and community‐based voter protection program that engages young adults to become voting rights advocates. We raise awareness of the voting changes and where necessary, help voters obtain an acceptable voter ID. Foot Soldiers foster the participation of young black men, and voters from underrepresented communities, as poll workers or poll watchers during the 2012 election cycle.
How Can You Help?
We need YOU to volunteer to become a poll worker or a poll monitor.
Poll workers attend trainings with local election boards, identify problems and serve inside the polling place on Election Day. Poll watchers distribute voter education materials and serve as our eyes and ears on the ground. They submit incident reports to the Election Protection Hotline, 1‐866‐OUR‐VOTE, and to the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s Election Day Command Center. Poll watchers work with voters and election officials to resolve problems before the polls close.
Black Youth Vote! Foot Soldiers for Democracy is actively recruiting volunteers in the following states – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.
