Civil Rights Leader Melanie L. Campbell Statement on House Majority’s Passage of the Unjust Federal Budget Gutting Vital Programs for the Most Vulnerable Americans
(Washington, DC) - National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) President and CEO, and Convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable, Melanie L. Campbell, issued the following statement in response to passage of an unethical federal budget passed by the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives:
“We are outraged that the FY2025 House budget reconciliation passed by the majority party in the House of Representatives will slash over $1.7 Trillion in government spending, in order to provide tax cuts for billionaires. According to the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities, the House budget that was passed could cause over 14 million low-income families to lose their healthcare and over 11 million Americans, who depend on SNAP, could lose their ability to buy groceries for their families.
Also, this budget deliberately increases financial burdens on working families, drives up prescription drug prices for our elders, slashes childcare programs that allow our mothers to work, eliminates housing options, and puts college even further out of reach for our youth. Eliminating the SAVE plan reinforces barriers to education so many already face, and without access to education, the fate of the middle class is in jeopardy.
Members of the House are elected to represent the will and interests of the American people. Instead, this budget reflects a profound failure of leadership and responsibility. By choosing to disregard the urgent needs of working families, women, children, seniors, and vulnerable communities, the House majority has turned its back on those it is sworn to serve. This failure to prioritize investments in healthcare, education, economic security, and basic human needs undermines the stability and well-being of our nation.
This House budget is only a win for the rich. It would rob our neighborhoods to pad the pockets of those who already have more than enough. These are not abstract policies – these cuts will cause immediate and devastating harm to our families and millions of Americans struggling to make ends meet. For Black women who are often the primary breadwinners – 68 percent of us - these policies devastate our ability to care for our families.
As a civil rights organization, the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation is dedicated to standing up for everyday people. We call on the U. S. Senate to do the right thing for the American people and correct this egregious budget.”
