"A Day Of Presence" In Support Of Gulf Coast Recovery: We Matter, We Care, We Act

Appalled by the lack of progress in the Gulf, a group of prominent business, civic and entertainment organizations have joined forces to mobilize Americans to converge upon New Orleans on August 29, the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The event, "8/29, A Day of Presence," will take place on August 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ernest N. Morial Conventional Center and is intended to force the government to act swiftly to create a Marshall Plan to restore New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region.

It saddens me to announce the recent death of National Coalition on Black Civic Participation founding board members, Yvonne Price, who passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2006 due to complications from a slip and fall accident nearly she endured nearly two months ago.

National Coalition On Black Civic Participation Focusing On Senate Action Expected Next Week

Civil rights organizations quickly turned a vigil in front of the Longworth House Office Building into a celebration following reauthorization of the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act of 2006 without punitive amendments. The concerted advocacy and sustained citizen pressure brought to bear by the combined efforts of the 80-organization National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, the Black Leadership Forum, and the National Urban League and served to keep the equality of voting opportunity high on the American public’s agenda.
